Acadian Supreme Inc. in Wellington has about 90 staff and they could employ up to 140 people.
Randy Corkum, Production Manager, says although they now have a lot of advanced equipment to help with the labour shortage, there are still opportunities for those looking to work in the seafood processing industry.
“At this facility, you will not necessarily be standing in one place working with the lobster all the time,” says Randy. “The work is diverse, and we want to help staff have a variety of work and experience.
“Our new equipment cuts down on the number of staff required, but year after year some employees do not return because of retirement, so we have to continue to hire to meet our staffing needs. The way we are dealing with the labour shortage is through technology, and we have great training in place to help people advance.
“We offer overtime hours for staff because we have to work with the demand and supply of the product.”
Randy says they also want to encourage high school and post-secondary students to apply. “Not only do students get steady work and competitive wages, but they will receive a bursary for their education when they work the number of hours required.”
Randy says it is important to include references with your resumé, which saves time when starting the hiring process with each applicant.
