Trim Landscaping has been in business for 13 years in Halifax. This year, the business has expanded to offer services to PEI as well.
“In Halifax, we are a full-service construction landscaping company, offering mowing, maintenance, landscape construction builds, decks, and concrete work,” says General Manager Brett Newcombe. “Snow removal and some construction work is done in the winter.
“On PEI this year, we will be offering just our construction services, such as decks and concrete work. Landscaping and mowing services will be offered to PEI customers in 2023.”
Job titles on PEI
Most new hires start as a Labourer. Other positions include Lead Hand/Foreman’s Helper, Foreman, Project Manager, and Heavy Equipment Operator.
The company has 70 employees in Halifax. Eight people have been hired for the upcoming season on PEI.
“We have filled our lead roles, and I would be interested in hiring two more Labourers.”
Labourers should be able to lift 50 pounds and be willing and able to work outside in the heat for 10 to 12 hours per day.
“We don’t look for any particular skills. We hire people who are green and can barely hold a hammer. It just takes time to learn on the job. Everybody learns at a different pace, and I appreciate if they are trying hard and making progress,” says Brett.
“It can be hard to find Labourers who are reliable and ready and willing to work. We can train anybody, but they need to start with a good attitude.
“I hire with the intent that they will move up in the company. If they are willing to start at a lower wage and get to know everything, then they could move into a Lead Hand position, and then maybe to a management position. I like to promote from within the company.
“Finding good Foremen and Project Managers with knowledge and experience can be challenging. Normally they come with experience from working at other competing companies.
“We offer a solid, competitive rate of pay. Health benefits begin after the probationary period of three months, and an RRSP contribution of one percent begins after six months.”
Team members don’t necessarily need their own transportation. “We pick them up at a central location and then go the job site.
“The big thing about working at Trim Landscaping is the culture and the way the employer is involved with the employees. It is a family work environment, and you are not just a number. You are treated the way you deserve to be treated.”
