Computer Aided Design (CAD) Specialists in the construction industry are using computer software to plan, draw and edit 2D and 3D designs for new building projects.
With this software, they can prepare and display drawings for new apartment buildings, commercial and industrial facilities, site grading plans, and more, while eliminating the limitations of physical, hand-drawn designs.
Ben Paton, HR Advisor for the Construction Association of PEI (CAPEI), says the demand for CAD Specialists is growing on PEI, and now is a great time to get into it.
“As technology continues to accelerate growth in the construction industry, positions like CAD Specialists are becoming more popular across PEI, which will really help companies finish builds at a quicker pace. Personally, I am seeing more and more employers looking for people with CAD experience.
“Larger companies with more resources are becoming more technologically advanced and more reliant on technology, and CAD can help them streamline the process to get the plans ready. When the work can be done quickly, everybody benefits.”
Ben’s role involves posting jobs on the IslandBuilder.ca website for CAPEI members.
“The qualifications typically required in previous CAD job postings include three years of work experience in Computer Design or Computer Science, and a diploma or degree in Computer Design, Computer Science, or Engineering.
“This role involves working in a fast-paced environment, constantly pumping out work to make the building process easier. You will need to have knowledge of the National Building Code, and you should be able to work both individually and with a team.”
Once you start in CAD, there is a wide range of future possible jobs, Ben says. “Some companies could hire CAD Specialists as Project Managers. They will need some experience in that field beforehand, but there are many jobs that could lead to becoming a Project Manager.
“Anyone interested in pursuing CAD as a career path is welcome to reach out to CAPEI.”
